National Drink Beer Day!

Today, we celebrate raising the glass or bottle for a toss with our favorite beer, it is National Drink Beer Day.  Do you love to drink beer?  What kind of beer do you drink?  This day is observed annually on September 28th.

Beer is often the favorite drink of most folks after work or during game day, family party or college student celebration, especially on their semester break.  Beer is the oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic drink in the world because of its convenience and easy handling.

Beer is brewed from cereal grains, most commonly with malted barley, though wheat, maize (corn), and rice are also sometimes used.  The brewing process takes place when the sugar and starch ferments.  The wort produces ethanol and carbonation on the beer and also contains crucial amino acids to provide nitrogen to the yeast as well as more complex proteins contributing to beer head retention and flavor.  Modern beer is brewed with hops, which adds bitterness and flavor and also acts as a natural preservative and a stabilizing agent.

Beer nowadays is distributed in bottles and cans and also served on draught, particularly in pubs and bars.  The brewing industry is a global business.  The strength of modern beer is usually 4% to 6% alcohol by volume, although it may vary between 0.5% and 20%, with some breweries creating examples of 40% ABV and above.

Nowadays, beer enthusiast has more selection than ever.  From regular to light beer, or malt beer to dark beer and variety of fruity tasting beer.  It is a very versatile drink since you can drink beer at the bar or buy in cases for home events, our just a six-pack to carry with you by the beach or a friends house to enjoy while watching a game.  Beer is considered to be a social lubricant in many societies and is consumed in countries all over the world.

Different beer makers are popping out like popcorn and creating different kinds of flavored beers.  One of my favorite beer is Hard Cider beer which is made of apple.  What is your favorite?  Whether it is dark, malt, draft, lite or just regular beer, grab a glass or bottle of beer to enjoy with your friends and family anytime you feel you needed a good thirst quencher.  Share on social media your favorite beer using #NationalDrinkBeerDay.

1781 Battle of Yorktown begins

On September 28, 1781, General George Washington, commanding a force of 17,000 French and Continental troops, begins the siege known as the Battle of Yorktown against British General Lord Charles Cornwallis and a contingent of 9,000 British troops at Yorktown, Virginia, in the most important battle of the Revolutionary War.

Earlier, the French fleet commanded by Francois, Count de Grasse, departed St. Domingue (the then-French colony that is now Haiti) for the Chesapeake Bay, just as Cornwallis chose Yorktown, at the mouth of the Chesapeake, as his base. Washington realized that it was time to act. He ordered Marquis de Lafayette and an American army of 5,000 troops to block Cornwallis’ escape from Yorktown by land while the French naval fleet blocked the British escape by sea. By September 28, Washington had completely encircled Cornwallis and Yorktown with the combined forces of Continental and French troops. After three weeks of non-stop bombardment, both day and night, from cannon and artillery, Cornwallis surrendered to Washington in the field at Yorktown on October 17, 1781, effectively ending the War for Independence.
