National Coffee Day!

Today we celebrate one of our favorite drink in the morning, coffee.  This day is observed annually on September 29th.

The way to start your day is always with a good hot cup of coffee, at least for those who love coffee, and I am one of them, and I will not function well without my morning cup.  I drink my coffee with cream and a little sweetener.  How do you drink your coffee?  Are you a coffee drinker?

Whether you drink it black or with cream, we love to enjoy the first cup of a hot steaming cup of coffee and read our morning paper.  It gives us a boost of energy before we head out for our day to work or for whatever engagement we have for that day.

We all know that coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans.  Coffee seeds are from the berries of Coffea species which is a native to tropical Africa, and Madagascar, the Comoros, Mauritius, and Reunion in the Indian Ocean.  Coffee plants are now cultivated in over 70 countries primarily in the equatorial regions of the Americas, Southeast Asia, Indian subcontinent, and Africa.

The two most commonly grown coffee are the Arabica and Robusta.  When the coffee berries riped, they are picked, processed, and dried.  The dried coffee is referred to as “beans” and they are roasted to different degrees depending on the desired flavor.  The roasted beans are ground and then brewed with near-boiling water producing the coffee we love to drink and enjoy in the morning.

Coffee is usually served hot, but nowadays, there is a variety of way to enjoy a cup of coffee, like cold-pressed coffee, which we call the cold brew.  Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world and it can be prepared and served in different style like espresso, caffe latte, with cream, or just plain black coffee. Studies show that moderate coffee consumption is benign or mildly beneficial for healthy adults, with the continued research on whether long-term consumption lowers the risk of some diseases.

Most people enjoy brewed coffee, some enjoy instant coffee.  Coffee is also made in a different blend like caffeinated coffee or decaffeinated.  Nowadays, there are several brands of coffee in the market, made from beans, ground or instant.  One of the popular coffee sold in the market nowadays is KCUP.  KCUP coffee is coffee in a pod and they are popular because of its convenience, where you just pop one pod on a coffee maker just made for it, the Keurig, press the button and you have a hot cup of coffee without the hassle of measuring the ground of coffee just to brew a pot.  KCUP also comes in a variety of brands and flavors like French vanilla, hazelnut, bold, regular and decaf and more.

So, how do you drink your coffee?  Well, no matter how you drink your coffee, no matter what flavor or style you like, enjoy and savor the freshly brewed cup of coffee today.  Share on social media what your favorite type of coffee you enjoy using #NationalCoffeeDay.

1988 Stacy Allison becomes the first American woman to reach the summit of Mt. Everest

Stacy Allison of Portland, Oregon, becomes the first American woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which at 29,035 feet above sea level is the highest point on earth. Allison, a member of the Northwest American Everest Expedition, climbed the Himalayan peak using the southeast ridge route.

Mount Everest sits on the crest of the Great Himalayas in Asia, lying on the border between Nepal and Tibet. Called Chomo-Lungma, or “Mother Goddess of the Land,” by the Tibetans, the English named the mountain after Sir George Everest, a 19th-century British surveyor of South Asia. The summit of Everest reaches two-thirds of the way through the air of the earth’s atmosphere–at about the cruising altitude of jet airliners–and oxygen levels there are very low, temperatures are extremely cold, and weather is unpredictable and dangerous.
