National Cheeseburger Day!

Today we celebrate America’s favorite sandwich, the Cheeseburger.  This is observed annually on September 18th.

Everybody loves a cheeseburger, don’t you?  Cheeseburger is a staple food at restaurants and fast-food world.  Every restaurant has its own signature cheeseburger.  My favorite fast-food burger chain is in New York, the Shake Shack Burger.  People line up for hours just to get a hold of their signature burger.  I know you will say a burger is a burger but for some reason, their burger is so delicious and sumptuous that I don’t care to wait in line because it is worth the wait.

We all know that cheeseburger is a hamburger topped with cheese.   The cheese is usually added to the cooking hamburger patty shortly before serving, which allows the cheese to melt. As with other hamburgers, a cheeseburger may include toppings, such as lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, bacon, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard or other toppings.

In fast-food restaurants, the cheese used is usually processed cheese, but any other meltable cheeses may be used. Common examples include cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, blue cheese, and pepper jack.

There are several stories about the origin of cheeseburger wherein one claims that the cheeseburger was created between 1924 and 1926 by a chef named Lionel Sternberger.  A homeless man suggested to add a slice of cheese to his order of hamburger, and eventually, Sternberger added it to his menu and the rest is history.

Nowadays, if you go to a picnic, the staple food you will find is burgers and hotdogs and among the condiments served is cheese.  To me cheese is what makes the hamburger delicious, the melty cheese oozing from the hot burger makes it so sumptuous in every bite combined with the juiciness of the burger.

So, today, celebrate this day by making your self some Cheeseburger, whether it is homemade or premade, just don’t forget the cheese.  If you just don’t want to be bothered and cook, you can always go to your favorite burger restaurant and enjoy a sumptuous Cheeseburger for dinner.  Share on social media some photos of your delicious cheeseburger using #CheeseburgerDay.

1973 Jimmy Carter files report on UFO sighting

Future President Jimmy Carter files a report with the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP) on September 18, 1973, claiming he had seen an Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) in October 1969.

During the presidential campaign of 1976, Democratic challenger Carter was forthcoming about his belief that he had seen a UFO. He described waiting outside for a Lion’s Club Meeting in Leary, Georgia, to begin, at about 7:30 p.m., when he spotted what he called “the darndest thing I’ve ever seen” in the sky. Carter, as well as 10 to 12 other people who witnessed the same event, described the object as “very bright [with] changing colors and about the size of the moon.” Carter reported that “the object hovered about 30 degrees above the horizon and moved in toward the earth and away before disappearing into the distance.” He later told a reporter that, after the experience, he vowed never again to ridicule anyone who claimed to have seen a UFO.
