Santa’s List Day:

(excerpted from http://www.holidayinsights.com/moreholidays/December/santaslistday.htm)

Today is Santa’s List Day. Have you been good all year? Have you been Naughty? Or, have you been nice? Santa knows.

Santa’s Elves have been everywhere, checking up on children all over the world, to see who has been naughty, and who has been nice. Thanks to the hard work of his elves, Santa now has two lists. The short list contains the names of a few children who have been naughty. A much longer list is filled with the names of children who have been good all year long.

Which list are you on?

National Dice Day:

(excerpted from http://www.zanyholidays.com/2007/12/roll-em-national-dice-day.html)

National Dice Day is not just about commemorating the glory of dice. It goes one step further: it’s all about the games. Never heard of the game “Dice”? Neither had I until today, but it’s really just as simple as rolling dice! Each player takes turns rolling five dice at once, and whatever the sum is of the little black dots, 5 for example, you multiply by 100 and voila: 500 points (100×5)! There are a few more rules about how to play but they sort of complicate things and the beauty of the dice game is how simple it is.

Barbórka, Miner’s Day (Poland):

(excerpted from http://culture.polishsite.us/articles/art68fr.htm)

Miners’ profession was always considered dangerous but prestigious therefore this day called “Barb rka” or Barburka” (there was a long battle between puritans of the Polish language which form is correct) was celebrated for centuries in a spectacular way. The name of the feast originate of course from St. Barbara as a patron. Read about Polish saints and patrons.

Miners are dressed in the special uniforms during Barbórka. The uniform consists of black suit and hat with a feather. The color of the feather (white, red or black) depends on the rank of the miner. Miners wear their decorative uniforms not only during Barborka but also for weddings, funerals and other important political or social ceremonies.

St. Barbara is not only a patron of coal-miners but also a patron of geologists, mathematicians and many others professions. Her patronage is linked with the fact that according to the legend she was imprisoned in a tall tower. Her imprisonment led to association with variety of construction professions. Her festivities take place in geological institutes and universities of Germany and Austria. Read St. Barbara Story HERE.  St. Barbara is also connected strongly with the Orthodox Church’s tradition.

The Senate passed by a 65-to-7 vote this evening the legislation to give the United States full, active participation in the United Nations Organization in accordance with the San Francisco Charter that it ratified, 89 to 2, last July.
Voting for the implementing measure, which now goes to the House, were forty-one Democrats, twenty-three Republicans and one Progressive. Opposing its passage were six Republicans– Senators Langer of North Dakota, Moore of Oklahoma, Revercomb of West Virginia, Shipstead of Minnesota, Taft of Ohio and Wherry of Nebraska, the minority whip–and one Democrat, Senator Wheeler of Montana. Senators Langer and Shipstead were the two who voted against ratification of the Charter.

Passage came after seven days of the Senate contest, which reached its final show-down stage in late afternoon as Senators Wheeler and Willis, Republican, of Indiana, sought to require the President to obtain specific Congressional authorization before he could make armed forces available to the UNO Security Council to halt an aggression or to maintain peace.
